John Gray High School Head Boy Jelani Hanson manages to balance his many school and community activities to which he is committed, while still excelling in his academics.
Academically ahead for 14, Jelani already has eight CSEC subjects, grade ones and one two, and has been an enthusiastic participant in a number of competitions including the National Spelling Bee, Conyers Debating Tournament, the JGHS Reading Challenge, the NCFA, Rotary Club Short Story Competition and many others.
Jelani has been an avid member of the Junior Optimist Club of John Gray High School and is the Club’s Treasurer. He is also a member of the Alex Panton Foundation, a Big Brother, Big Sister Peer Mentor and Executive Producer for the Savannah United Church Leadership Team. Jelani was also the President of Leos for 2018-2020, having served as a very vibrant member of the Alpha LEO Club of John Gray High School. He was Pupil Leadership Team Representative in 2018-2019 liaising with pupils and teachers to address concerns and was also President (2019) of the JGHS Debating Club.
An energetic community services volunteer, Jelani has been involved with the Optimist Club’s Cleaning Up Projects, Special Olympics projects, and has been a Cayman Islands Eye Screening and Cayman Islands Cancer Society volunteer.
As a musician, he contributes to his church choir and youth choir. As a member of the Savannah United Church, Jelani is a great example of a young person who exudes the Christian principle and is an excellent peer mentor. He is respected by adults and youngsters alike and is described as ambitious, committed and resilient, making him an exceptional leader and student.
An all-round worthy recipient, Jelani selflessly gives his time and energy to both service and leadership.
